INVITATION
We have the pleasure to invite you to a more personal exhibition for the Saxon community of Viscri and more open to the general public, basically an exhibition of vernacular photography integrated with stories, facilitated by the Saxon people of Viscri, but also members who today live in Germany in their second or third generation, and through their kindness, we can see and get to know the “introverted” Saxon people of 100 years ago, being at the same time a cultural immersion in a bygone world.
We enjoy the built heritage, but we have never wondered who stood behind the courtyards, what those people looked like, how they dressed, what their rituals were. Now is the chance to really see them. Because these photographs are important for the cultural legacy left behind, for the photographic material cultural heritage of Romania and because a whole COMMUNITY (even if they are more spiritually attached to these places and not necessarily by living in Viscri) has mobilized to make this exhibition for the general public, an exemplary model that can be taken up by other communities in the recovery of local identity, history and filling in the white spots. In fact, collective memory is embedded in the sequence of photos and stories, and the story next to the photo is the narrative of a community reading its own messages. Many of these photos, if not taken out of their trunks, may well fade over the years and be just broken pieces of a large puzzle, without a backing. In such exhibitions, they become indexed as metadata for the future and an anchor in time for a changing world. Thus, we invite you to the exhibition that draws an ethnocultural mental map restoring the community’s past!
